News from Mrs. Johnston's First Grade
This week brought a huge seating change which is proving to be successful. Twenty-three kiddos in this small room seems challenging at times. It is difficult for that many to remember to whisper and the noise level keeps creeping up. Specials teachers have commented as well, so we are really working hard to pay better attention and stay quiet so all can hear. Actually Friday the 3rd was our best day yet! That is very encouraging and much more enjoyable for all!!
We have continued with great poems about the letters of the alphabet and have reviewed 13 high frequency words so far: and, go, I, is, like, my, see, have, here, for, the, said., and see. Your child should know all of those words quite well by now. I am aware that many are far beyond that and thus, they are reading books during Self-Selected Reading, at their levels. In math we have discovered the partners for our numbers from 3 to 10. In Science we have discussed Safety--at home, in the car, on the bus, and walking or riding bikes. In Social Studies we have learned a lot about our leaders--mayor and president plus even our parents who coach or lead scouts, etc. I have a million books to share and of course, we'll have literacy centers every day. Art will take
place on Day A, P.E. on Days B and D, and Music on Days C and E. We'll also have Guidance every other week for 30 minutes. Media takes place in 7 day blocks--half an hour each day, starting September 13.
You should have your Show and Tell Schedule by now. Hopefully it is fun to plan this each month with your child.
We do have room mothers now and I thank Mrs. Fast and Mrs. Prince for volunteering! I have given them the names of the other moms who said they'd assist.
Our field trip to Nebraska City is scheduled for Monday, October 4. More information will follow in a yellow note, to come home next week. Parents are invited to attend, if they would like.
