Steve Frey, Head Coach
Coach Frey is in his first year as the Head Baseball coach at Elkhorn High School. He takes over for Jerry Frerichs who retired after 35 years of coaching baseball. A graduate in 1994 of Bismarck High School in Bismarck, North Dakota, Coach Frey was a 4-sport athlete in cross country, basketball, track and baseball. During his senior year, Bismarck High won state in cross country, basketball, and track. After graduation, he went on to pitch at North Dakota State. Coach Frey graduated from North Dakota State University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and earned a Master of Science Degree in Sports and Recreation Management in 2002.
From 2000- 2004, Coach Frey was the pitching coach at North Dakota State. During his tenure, the Bison collected a regular season conference championship (2002) as well as a conference tournament championship (2004). During that time, he also worked with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the independent Northern League. Since moving to Omaha in 2004, Coach Frey has coached at different levels including select baseball, Millard West High School and a summer collegiate wood bat team.
Steve is married to Buffy and has two daughters, Maris (1) and Tiffany (1). He is currently in his second year in the Elkhorn School District and teaches physical education at Manchester Elementary.
Todd Beran, Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Beran graduated from Lexington High School, in Lexington, Nebraska in 1998. While in high school, Todd was a three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball and baseball. During the summer, Coach Beran played baseball for the Lexington Legion Baseball program.
Todd earned a Bachelors of Arts in Education at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. In college, Todd played baseball for two years. Todd has a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Doane-Lincoln.
Coach Beran’s coaching history began in Lexington in 1999, as a Head Coach for the Junior Legion Baseball program. In Spring 2002, Coach Beran was a volunteer assistant for Coach Frerichs while completing his student teaching at Spring Ridge Elementary. In 2003, Coach Beran was a Head Coach for Westside Reserves in Omaha while teaching 7thgrade Math at the Middle School. Also, at Westside, Coach Beran was the head 8th grade football coach. He coached at Westside for 4 years before moving to St. Louis. In St. Louis, Coach Beran was a volunteer assistant for Marquette High School Varsity in the spring. In the summer, he was the Head Coach for the JV team. In Summer 2007, Coach Beran won the JV State Championship in Kirksville, MO with a record of 20-7. Coach Beran has been an assistant coach in Elkhorn
for the spring and summer for 2 years.
Todd is married to Alisha and has two kids, Hannah 5, and Huston 2. Todd currently works for the Elkhorn Public Schools as a 5th grade teacher at Spring Ridge Elementary.
Steve Selk, Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Selk is in his first year with Elkhorn Public Schools. He is a business teacher at the high school, where he will also serve as an assistant baseball coach. Previous to his time here, he spent 6 years with the Pius X Baseball program, and 1 year teaching at Lincoln Southeast High School.
After graduating from Fairbury High School in 2002, Coach Selk began his college career at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS. After spending only a semester there, he joined the Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball team where he was a starting pitcher for 3 years.
During the summer he spends his time playing golf and working out at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Eagle, NE. Coach Selk has been married to his wife, Stacey, for 3 years and still resides in Lincoln.
Mike O'Kane, Junior Varsity Head Coach
Coach O'Kane is a graduate of Gehlen High School in LeMars, Iowa and Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. He taught and coached at Spalding High School in Granville, Iowa for three years prior to moving to Elkhorn in 1985. Mike has been a teacher at Elkhorn High School for the past 24 years. He has coached Legion baseball and High School baseball for several years. Mike is currently the Elkhorn Red Sox coach in the summer.
Mike is married to Cindy and they have four grown children.
Lance Clark, Junior Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Clark currently teaches third grade and coaches baseball at Elkhorn High School. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1986. After graduation, Coach Clark joined the Air Force Reserve as a fire fighter and attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln for Fire Protection Technology. He worked as an Emergency Medical Technician, in G.I. until 1991 when he moved to Fremont, NE. Coach Clark worked at Valmont Industries in Valley until 2002, when he decided to attend Midland Lutheran College in Fremont to complete his teaching degree. He graduated from Midland in 2005 with honors.
While at Midland, Coach Clark was a full-time assistant baseball coach for Jef Field and the Midland Warriors for three seasons. He is currently earning his masters degree in Educational Leadership through Doane College. In addition to Elkhorn, Coach Clark has coached youth baseball for 11 years and had been on the Board of Directors for the Fremont Nighthawks Youth Baseball League for 8 years. He is currently in an advisory role and the Director of Player and Coach Development for that organization. He firmly believes that the fundamentals of baseball have been pushed aside and need to be brought back into the game of baseball.
This season will be Coach Clark’s fourth season on the Elkhorn Baseball coaching staff. He is the assistant Junior Varsity Coach under Coach O’Kane. He also works closely with Coach Frey, Coach Beran and Coach Selk on the varsity team.
Lance is married and lives in Fremont with his wife, Lisa and four boys, Jourdan, Austin, Trey and Gage. This is his fourth year in the Elkhorn Public School District.
Chris Kuncl, Freshmen Head Coach
Coach Kuncl grew up in Prague, Nebraska. During high school, Coach Kuncl was a four sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and track for Prague Public. During the summer, he played baseball for the Dwight/Valparaiso legion. Coach Kuncl went to Dana College in Blair, NE on a football & academic scholarship where he earned a Bachelors of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education and Coaching. During his time at Dana College, Coach Kuncl played four years of football for the Vikings. In Spring 2009, Coach Kuncl earned a Masters in Administration from Doane College.
Coach Kuncl has been a teacher for nine years and his coaching history began at Omaha Northwest High School in 2002. For Five years, Coach Kuncl worked both as a football and baseball coach while at Omaha Northwest. He has worked with all high school levels, such as Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen, both in baseball and football, both as a head coach and as an assistant. Coach Kuncl made the transition to Elkhorn in the Fall of 2008 when he became the Head Freshmen Baseball coach. The 2010 baseball season will be Coach Kuncl's second season with the Elkhorn Program.
Currently, Coach Kuncl is the Physical Education teacher at Spring Ridge Elementary in the Elkhorn school system. Coach Kuncl is married and lives within the Elkhorn district with his wife, Janie, and his 6 year old son, Trevor, who attends Manchester Elementary.
Kyle McCright, Freshman Assistant Coach
Coach Kyle McCright grew up in Columbus Nebraska where he was a two sport athlete for Columbus High School. He played football and baseball for the Discoverers. Kyle was an infielder and pitcher on the baseball team and compiled a 12-2 pitching record during his senior season. Kyle was awarded a baseball scholarship to Midland Lutheran College in Fremont Nebraska, where he was a pitcher for the Warrior baseball team for 3 seasons before a shoulder injury ended his playing career.
Coach McCright began coaching in 2005 for his home-town Columbus Legion Baseball Team. He was the pitching coach for 3 seasons in the Columbus Junior Baseball Program. In the summer of 2008, Kyle was the Head Coach of the Columbus Junior team and led that team to the State Baseball Tournament in Omaha. In the summer of 2009, Coach McCright was the Head Coach for the Columbus Seniors Team. He has also been the Head Coach for 2 seasons in the Stike Zone Baseball League in Omaha and was also a Freshman Assistant Coach for the Fremont Bergan Baseball Team. In the spring of 2009, Coach McCright came to Elkhorn and was a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Junior Varsity Team in Elkhorn. This spring, Coach McCright will be an assistant coach for the Freshman Baseball Team in Elkhorn. Kyle McCright is a Special
Education Teacher at Manchester Elementary School in Elkhorn.
